New Painting, 'Hidden' for Sale

This is my new painting 'Hidden,' for sale on my site, colorcatstudios101.etsy.com. I've shown several closeups here; for an indepth description, it's at colorcatstudios101.etsy.com

Upside Down Classroom

I keep my students at this. Drawing from an upside down picture gives surprisingly good results. It's all in comparing proportions, and it removes preconceived notions of what something looks like.

This drawing isn't very good, but I did it in probably one or two minutes.

Tribute to My Dad

Allow me a moment to give my dad a small tribute.  Here he is in 1943, age 22.  He was behind enemy lines much of the time, held bridges, got strafed, was yelled at by General Patton, captured Nazis by himself ("Hanenburg, NOW what are you up to?") freed prisoners from concentration camps, and watched many friends die.

He looks like my brothers and my sons. Here I see a strong man.  Honest, intelligent and determined.  All of these years he has encouraged me and had my back.

Now at age 94, his body is becoming feeble. It is so hard to see.  But don't worry, dad, I've got your back.  I love you.

Birds for Sale!

I just listed these sweet birds on my website.  Made to order, I paint any bird of your choice and colors.  Sweet!

These adorable little feathered peoples are all sold, but give an example of the work I do.  My parents cultivated my love of birds by putting up feeders and bird baths, keeping the feeders stocked, and having a bird guide and binoculars handy at all times. We all grew to love them. In a Where are you?, my bird paintings are a tribute to my parents.

Enjoy these, and dig into your own mind to find your favorite bird.  You choose any bird and colors, and I will paint it on heavy cotton paper with watercolors and ink.  $150.00.  The website gives details.

M. C. Escher Waterfall

From one Dutch artist to another, I love this guy.  M. C. Escher.  We had the privilege of wandering around the square upon which his home is located on a beautiful day in den Hague, Netherlands.  I loved visiting there, by the way.  One reason was that the land was filled with 'my people,' freckly, frizzy-headed people.  Just made me happy to be among my own.

Anyway, his home is now a museum, and we delightedly took a wander through it, all of its glorious three or four floors, jam packed with his work.

Here's his Waterfall.  One of my favorites.

Which way is it flowing, anyway?

Jose's Boys Watercolor

This is a sweet little watercolor of my friend's sweet boys, backpacks and all.

It's funny, but this one was a long time coming.  They were so cute that I asked my friend if he'd photographed them from the back with their backpacks.  The answer was always no.  Ever week, "Jose, did you take the picture?" "No."  "Jose, did you take the picture?" "No."  I knew that one of these days his oldest would leave off with that backpack, never to pick it up again.

I finished this painting yesterday and gave it to him today.  He told me his oldest son grew out of it and had to get a new one.

Just in time.

Yes, I can paint your family.
