Where, you ask, do I get my inspiration?  Well, after spending a whole lot of serious work on these I took a photo that might give you a hint.  

Rocks.  Leaves.  Pine needles.

Cool Watercolor Leaves

On this hot summer day what we need is a nice cool painting.  This watercolor of leaves fits the bill!  I went to a ‘Picasso Black and White’ exhibit which blew me away and this painting is one of the resultant pieces, giving my friend Pablo a nod.  In that exhibit they showed a lot of ‘negative space’ paintings he did... painting the background AROUND the subject.  I have learned to love this technique!  This one is for sale at colorcatstudios101.etsy.com.  Look me up!

Leaf Painting in Negative Space

A couple years ago I went to ‘Picasso, Black and White’ down at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.  I was not excited about it and had an appointment after my museum visit.  You may have noticed that I’m a pretty colorful girl, so I was expecting a bunch of tiny black and white sketches.  

Picasso blew me away!  I staggered out of the museum about five hours later hungry, exhausted, missed my appointment and inspired to the hilt! His work was monumental and in many pieces he entirely covered the canvases with colors, only to cover them up with white paint and quickly sketch in his subject. The ‘sketching’ was eliminating the white paint to show the colorful ‘underbelly’ of the piece. 

He inspired me to use negative space in my paintings and this is a good example.  Can you see how the entire piece was once entirely color? By painting the transparent white behind the leaves, the leaves are now the subject. This is for sale on my website, shown below.   It’s called ‘Oh the Beauty of the Earth!’

Golden Acrylics Painter

Well, I guess this makes me a Golden Girl. I did this little piece with Golden’s QOR colors and have to say they’re the best, most highly-pigmented watercolors in the business. Added to that touches of Golden’s fluid and high-flow acrylics to brighten and deepen the whole thing. I like this little piece, and was inspired to paint it the other day on my bike ride.  Noting the smashed mulberries on the path, I looked up to behold my afternoon snack.  Post snack I took a couple inspiring shots,and here you have it. Mulberry love.  Ah... I just named the painting. Mulberry Love. Let me know if you want me to paint your mulberries.
