Artists Naming Works of Art

This is my lion painting.  I named him King for obvious reasons, which comes to another point; why do artists give such stupid names to their works of art? Why, if you painted a lady sewing, for instance, would you name the piece ‘Woman Sewing?’ (Renoir). Or... following the thought here, ‘Girl with a Watering Can?’ Renoir again.  Renoir, I feel you.

Would you like to know the secret of artists through history, myself included?  We really just want to paint.  We want to paint beautiful things and have people BUY them, so we can paint MORE beautiful things!  Once the painting is finished, we don’t CARE what the painting’s name is!  As for me, I just want to make it, finish it, love it, and then do it again with another piece. The naming thing is distracting from the first desire, to create.

All this being said, ‘King’ really IS a good name for this one, don’t you think?  And artists out there? How DO you name your work?  This piece is for sale on my website which you can click on below.  Will somebody please buy King so I can paint another painting?  Thank you! In the meantime, I’m going to go paint flowers.  I think I’m going to be really original and name that painting ‘Flowers.’

Part the Sixth - Cat Painting

Part the Sixth of my creative endeavor featuring my cat painting.  See previous posts as they’re in order.  As creatives often do, I once again changed my plan, taking a different tangent and turning the entire painting upside down.  I decided I’d prefer the blue at top and the reds below;  all three - the blues, reds and golds presenting our cat Lupino in a very royal manner as he so justly deserves.  A step not shown is that I burnished the golds in the painting for permanent adherence.  Once oriented, I got out my handy dandy Lyra watercolor crayons and drew it out.  Lyra crayons are the adored but unsung heros of my art supply stock.  As sketching is my specialty, this is one of my favorite steps.  Crayon done I try to always walk away and leave it at least overnight.  When I come back I can see any little tiddly-pom discrepancies in my work and can correct them thusly.  This finished, it is finally ready for PAINT!

Inspiration for This Artist

These are my Peruvian Lilies.  I prefer to call them Bad Hair Day flowers.  Aren’t they just lovely? Even though they are beautiful, they DO look like bad hair in the morning, though, don’t they? Scroll down to see what the background pattern is.

It IS a nice background.  Actually, it was serendipity.  I washed one of my summer dresses and hung it outside on our umbrella table.  It just happened to be hanging there. Of course, turquoise is such a nice compliment to red that it seemed like the perfect foil.  So there you have it!

I spend a lot of time outside. Working in the garden, puttering around, biking, swimming and of course having coffee in the morning with my guy. ❤️ I cannot overstate the inspiration I draw from the beauty of God’s creation.

A Creative Life

If you’re curious about the crazy artist responsible for this feed, here I am in a bush.  Actually, this is a telling portrait because I tend to immerse myself in pretty much everything. These are lilacs which grow only in the North.  I haven’t had a chance to see them blooming for 20 YEARS and every lilac we passed got to meet me personally. I believe that artists are a little more in touch with, well, everything.  If you took a walk with me, you’d find out about that because I have to stop and examine whatever interests me. Part of my mission as an artist is to show these beautiful things to others.

My friend enhanced the above image somehow.  And below... just can’t stop talking...

Dave Barry Quote

Now and then we all just need to laugh.  So I put one of my favorite Dave Barry quotes onto a background of one of my paintings. Just in case you didn’t know, the difference between men and women. :). Haha! Just had to deviate from my art feed for this one as it has given me so many smiles.

Art Studio Inspiration

This feed is supposed to be about art, but really, all art we create is just a cheap imitation of the art God creates.  This is my delphinium sporting what I think is one of the most perfect combination of blues in all creation, tying for first place with the bluebird.  Because we had such a nice cold winter and a long, cool spring, it’s on its second bloom.
