Portrait of an Artist. This Artist

This is the artist responsible for this crazy blog. Me. I’m just over here celebrating my naturally red hair. One of our sons tells me I’m prone to gross hyperbole, but I don’t know what he’s talking about.

Monkey Photography

Went down to the Museum of Fine Arts Houston yesterday and they had a nice exhibit on the history of photography. Apparently this handsome fellow caused quite a stir. This seminal photo started a court case in which the rights of the photo were determined. The prosecutors said that the monkey should own the rights. Yep. It was determined that only humans could own the rights to a photo. There you have it! Enough to make you smile,huh. :)

An Artist’s Self Portrait

As I have my students do self portraits it’s only right I do them as well. This one stemmed from our show, Cinderella. I got the entire orchestra to Sharpie a mustache onto a finger, and, as we sat at the foot of the stage would ‘mustache’ the actors when we weren’t playing to try to get them to break character. Never worked but it was fun to try. I also teach that portraits should reveal things about the person; in the background you can see words of some of my favorite things. :)

Tiny Art, Artist Trading Cards

Teeny Tiny Art Time! Wow! Can you believe it’s finally back? This little piece is only 2 1/2”x3 1/2” in a series of four masks I created. I’ve shown it with some bullet casings for size. As we’re back in school and I’m an art teacher, my time is broken up and I don’t have as much time to create. Looking at my past work and creating small inspires me, then I’m off to big stuff again! Plus, I LOVE artist trading cards!

Watercolor Sketch

I love doing quick watercolor sketches of people. This was a demo for mixed media in my classes. First, I laid it out with a fine point pen and went to bigger nibs as I corrected. Not much into the erasing thing. The background and hair were layered with gesso and painted. Nice textures and interest are created with gesso and it moves and separates the sedimentary paint pigments. I like it! Yes, I do commissions.

Another look at those natural color-sources. I asked about cochineal, because you couldn't just have that on a shelf, and yes, their deep reds are cochineal. It's a South American insect that is a parasite to the prickly pear. Owners deposit them into their fields, and blow them off and collect them once they're big. Then they crush their fat, bloody bodies for a nice, natural, red dye. I'm so happy to report that the rug we purchased has cochineal in it. I'm also happy to report that it's likely in your lipstick and blush, ladies, and if you drink cherry coke - it's in there, too! :)

'My' Chair

At our theatre the other night we had an orchestra meeting after I taught my sets class. After about a half hour, someone pulled me out of the meeting for a few minutes. When I came back, everyone in the room was laughing and pointing to the nice, uh, black leather chair. I had paint on the back of my shirt, and it permanently smeared all over the leather! The last time I went in the office, I noticed that someone had taped up the sign you see here. One way to lay claim to something! Well, it's not the first time, let's see, there's my driveway with many colors of paint, our carpet with Peter Pan green footprints, my car with yellow paint on the seat, my gloves, half of my clothes. It seems like everyone likes my painted clothes, kind of like already-broken-in-jeans. Maybe I should start a clothing line!
