New Cat Painting

This painting, which I named ‘Oh, Pippy,’ (for all the times we say exactly that when he gets into trouble) will be revealed this evening in its entirety.  The crazy, wild background symbolizes all the trouble and messes he gets into.  For sale.

Here he is in his unfinished state, wild, crazy background to indicate his wild, crazy, troublemaking self. 🤭
You will find him tonight at colorcatstudios101.etsy.com

The Adventures of Pippy, aand a new Friend!

Could it be? Pippy and his friend are wondering who’s down there looking up at them! The saga continues.  In my shop; only three original pieces featuring our new doggo friend.

Cat Painting Finished!!

May I present my newest painting!  Once more I have given birth.  That’s what it feels like!

This is ‘The Beggar.’ You can find many works like this on my website.  Doesn’t he have a beautiful face? ❤️
This is an acrylic on canvas.  I used a photo of our cat, sitting on my studio floor, begging for me to love him.
There.  Everything cleaned up. :)

New Painting Coming!

Bright!  No filter needed! Watch for my new painting in the next couple days.  When I’ve got two or more brushes loaded simultaneously it’s a good thing.  It means I’ve done some serious planning and pre-frenzy work and now it’s all out.

Aren’t these colors luscious?

 Stay tuned!

Lion Watercolor Sold

Sold! My Door Knocker Lion.  I painted these heavily saturated watercolors on a super heavy, smooth watercolor paper which insured this gorgeous lay-down.  Once finished, I drew my lion in first lightly in pencil, then went over it in pen; not that I would ever make any mistakes, but ya never know! ;). It probably wouldn’t have mattered anyway, because if you DO make any mistakes on this type of paper, there’s no erasing anyway!

My lion painting was inspired by Narnia, the show we put on.  I was in charge of sets and also played in the orchestra for the shows.  I wish I could find the files but I’d have to dig deep to find the Wardrobe I painted.  It was lovely and sported a door-knocker lion as well as all kinds of lovely things in fake, painterly bas relief.

Here’s a closeup.  I couldn’t have been happier with the way this turned out.

And another... when you use super nice (expensive) watercolor paper, this is the kind of gradation of colors you can expect.  Since this was inspired by Narnia, I used highlights on this painting the same way I did in the show.

I’m so glad this painting sold to someone I love very much.  May she get as much enjoyment out of him as I have.

In The Studio

Commission work today; therefore all you get to see is my palette. HOWEVER, once I get to these tiny brushes it means I’m almost done with it! :) love!!  One wonderful thing about spring break is that I have more time to paint, and that’s always good!

New Puppy Painting

Here I’m holding my new little puppy painting so you can see the size. This adorable little doggo is a commission I just finished - yay! Stella is a bundle of fun so I put polka dots in the background to symbolize her playfulness. Guaranteed to bring a smile of delight, this acrylic painting is only 12”x12” painted on cradled wood.  With the gold textures in the background, her mood changes as light filtering onto the painting changes.  She’s so CUTE!

In this case, good things definitely come in small packages! Check out my website for all kinds of crazy wonderful stuff! colorcatstudios101.etsy.com

Newest Painting, Full Picture

Presenting the newest addition to my family of paintings.  At 14 1/2x36” it comprises royal colors that bespeak our cat’s regal position.  In this collage we’re flanked on either side with closeups of the colors and textures within the painting itself.  It was great fun painting on a hardwood panel as opposed to canvas, and as a result it easily withstood the many layers I threw at it.  Pretty much loving this one,and it even matches my naturally red hair. :)

Well, this one’s not for sale, but I’m wondering if you could picture YOUR animal so beautifully portrayed.  If so, let me know!

Newest Animal Painting

Each Christmas I step back from all my other work and give myself a creative break.  This year I chose to do my baby, Lupino, and spent this entire month on him. Here’s a little sneak peek cutaway... the big reveal comes when I edit my 100-some photos. I chose to name him Lupus Regem, Latin for wolf king, as he looks like a wolf and is very regal. He also weighs in at just over 16 pounds!

Note the generous use of gold, blue and red; these are symbols of his royalty.  The Latin name gives a nod to the years I spent teaching our kids Latin and how much it has enriched our everyday lives. My plan is to reveal the mystery and walk you step by step through my process for this piece, so we’ll call this the first installment!

And remember, the first step toward your own painting is if you like my art.  I can paint pretty much anything you ask.  (Whew! That’s quite a claim, huh? Now I’m in trouble!)

I digress, but it does remind me of a time someone said, ‘Can you paint a ship on the ocean, and paint like Rembrandt?’  I said, ‘Sure, I can do that.’  After moaning and ‘why on earth did I say that-ing’ for about two weeks I got down to work and painted a GORGEOUS ship which I loved!  My patrons loved it as did everyone that saw it, in fact I had to paint a partner for it and sold that as well after it did a local tour of its own.

So, what’s the moral of the story?  Well, for me it means I should NEVER say I can paint like Rembrandt!  I think I’ll stick to painting like myself!

Finished Dog Painting being Shipped Out

Here’s my finished dog painting that’s going to go for a nice flight this week.  I love doing animal portraits and it was a delight turning this fine fellow, whose name is Weldon, into a shiesty looking character who would most certainly beat us all at poker. 12x12” on gallery-wrapped canvas. A very loving person hired me for this and is surprising her cousin on her birthday.  Nice gift!

Watch out for Poker Playing Dogs

I was hired to paint this doggo to be given as a surprise gift. He’s so shifty he reminds me of one of those cigar smoking, poker playing dogs.  Their photo had him stuffed into a spandex suit, haha!  The background, although it doesn’t photograph well, is gold.  I’m going to miss seeing this bad boy in our little corner of the world when he gets shipped off.  Yes, I do commissions. You can contact me here or at colorcatstudios@gmail.com.

Monkey Photography

Went down to the Museum of Fine Arts Houston yesterday and they had a nice exhibit on the history of photography.  Apparently this handsome fellow caused quite a stir.  This seminal photo started a court case in which the rights of the photo were determined.  The prosecutors said that the monkey should own the rights.  Yep.  It was determined that only humans could own the rights to a photo. There you have it! Enough to make you smile, huh.  :)

Lion Painting

This lion is a direct descendant of my first lion.  A client liked the previous one but wanted a different size and different colors and this is the result.  I do really love the colors of this one, and rather than predatory, like my first one, this one looks like a paradise lion. Sold, but I have mini-posters and magnets.

Artistic Magnets for Sale

I just posted these magnets this afternoon and am so excited to share these from my #etsy shop: Red Panda Magnets . The painting was a commission and is sold, but has been so well loved I made magnets to spread the joy! You can find other magnets as well including two lions, a tiger, a bear, an owl and a raccoon. Now THAT’S what I call fun mail!

Below is a closeup of the original.  I zoomed in on it so you could see how beautiful it is.

The entire piece...

Yours truly holding it so you can get the dimensions.  I do commissions so you could have me paint your heart’s desire too! It’s a fun process that you would enjoy.  At this time, I’m commissioned to paint:
1) Someone’s bulldog (actually, it’s a surprise gift for her friend, who owns the dog. ;)
2) Someone’s house

Here pictured with a couple other magnets that I offer.

Oh goodness, aren’t they adorable!

They’re $3.00 each. I posted on my website that if you order ten I put in an extra two when I ship out. :)

Pretty sure you need magnets!

Red Panda Painting Process

Here’s a little peek into my process.  First, measuring, proportions and sketches.  Always. Lots. Then, drawing into the canvas and slowly working my way around, again and again until it finally comes into its own. This one’s gone but I take commissions. I’m also wondering if I make magnets and posters if people would buy them?

Red Panda Painting Commission

This adorable little fellow is coming out to meet the world tonight, barely dry.  Someone hired me to paint a red panda and wanted me to include some teal, which was really easy since they’re complimentary colors. I think he is ADORABLE. When she came to see him she said, ‘He’s even cuter in person!’ That’s what they always say; it looks bigger, brighter and ‘realer’ than photos ever could. I do commissions of pretty much any subject requested. Check out  my website, colorcatstudios101.etsy.com, and if you like my style, tell me what you’d like me to paint for YOU!

This fine fellow is 24x36”.

Finished Bloodhound Painting, Really!

This is a painting of a very old bloodhound I just finished. His name is Blue and I think he’s pretty stinking adorable. I’m not sure I’d want him slobbering on my carpet, but I would definitely want him hanging on my wall!  There are some very slight differences between my previous post and this one - can you find them?  The changes I made are minute... ;)

Do you have pets you’d like me to paint?  Let me know!

Puppy for Sale!

Puppy PAINTING for sale, that is! I just posted this fine furry fellow for sale on my website.  He is full of fun and ready for a new home.  Trust me, he will be easier than a real dog!

Have I ever told you I paint on heavy, gallery-wrapped canvas with the highest quality fade-resistant paints? I also finish my paintings with a UV varnish. If they decide to get dusty on you, all you have to do is wipe a damp cloth over them. Also, this guy badly needs a name.  Any suggestions? I’m thinking about ‘Not Quite Rabid.’

Here are a few closeups.  Love the colors and textures in this painting so much!

Here I am holding it so you can get a perspective of size.  It’s 24x36”, and I’ve got it wired for immediate hanging.

I painted him in big, bold strokes to give the feeling of imminent movement, as you should feel with a dog like this! Oh, my goodness, I love him!
