Top Nine 2019

Instead of choosing nine best to wrap up 2019 I decided to choose nine SOLD.  As for all of you I am sure, it’s been a both an extremely difficult year and a truly wonderful year.  I feel privileged to walk in the creative path that God planned for me and thank all of you who support me in continuing the walk down that path.  #blessed #topnine

Watercolor Sketch

Sometimes I end up liking the weirdest stuff.  This pencil sketch of a tree took me all of a minute.  Painting it probably took all of five minutes.  And I like it!  Who knew? This painting used Ruby Mountain’s awesome Indigo, their Paris Green and coolest-ever Naples Yellow.  Ruby Mountain, LOVE your paints!

You would also notice my phone up there; I ALWAYS use an Otterbox.  I chose to have a ‘pretty’ phone case and my phone lasted three weeks.  Yep.  Tried and true Otterbox person here.  On my phone case is a sticker of one of my paintings.  Did you know?  I sell stickers?  Yep.  Find them on my website with all kinds of lovely things: www.colorcatstudios101.etsy.com

Watercolor Fun

A nice cold day.  Good for walks and fires and watercolors.  It’s not often I get a chance to sit down and paint for pure joy.  The other day on a walk I looked up and saw sweet gum boughs and thought, ‘I could paint sweet gum...’.

Recently I got some new watercolors that are highly sedimentary and some have mica in them to add some pizzazz.  Likey!  I am a tried and true fan of Golden’s QOR watercolors; they are simply the best.  But recently I purchased some handmade watercolors from Ruby Mountain Watercolors and am wholeheartedly impressed!  

This shows my little sweet gum design from start to finish.  You would also note that you can see light pencil lines.  I’m a big fan of understanding the process and love to peer into paintings and figure out how they were done.  Those light pencil lines in my work are your first clue! 

Testing out the paints.  I always do this on nice paper and find a way to repurpose it; cards, bookmarks, ATC cards, etc.

Ruby Mountain paints.  Look them up!  Well worth it.  I think my dive into handmade watercolors may cost me dearly....

An Artist’s Palette

What is this, you ask?  Why, thank you for asking!  It’s our... dum de da bum.... Palette of the Day!  (so exciting).  This palette represents something I don’t get much of a chance to do - artist’s play. Mixing colors, adding white, lowering the colors with black, etc.  This kind of ‘play’ is actually really key to an artist’s understanding and use of color.  Second pic is my results.  Work like this, which I find relaxing and rejuvenating, is super important to my ‘serious’ work. 

SOLD - Chicago Blackhawks Paint Pour

SOLD! My people wanted me to do a paint pour with the Chicago Blackhawks’ colors.  Their son’s room is done in entirely these colors and they knew this would be a winning choice.  Loving the little cells in this one -to me, some of them look like pomegranate seeds.  Lots to look at in this piece and I am loving those Chicago Blackhawk colors.  You can find more at

Relaxing Paint Pour

I’m really happy with this piece and love the way the cells formed (a pouring artist’s goal). The cool colors are so calming they remind me of water and that little pop of hot red gels the entire work.  I love it!  

You can see where I signed it on and notice that all sides are a continuation of the front.  Just one of those little extras I think this is important to the whole and enhances the entire painting. Also, the frame is two inches deep; one of my paintings has some real heft.  Another indicator of quality.

Enchanted Rock Painting

Here’s a closeup of my newest painting which is a tiny 8”x8” square, named Enchanted Rock to memorialize those shallow, rocky streams all over it. The painting has a lot of iridescents and golds in it which don’t photograph well.  I also put my sock monkey mug in for size comparison and then Pippy the Quality Checker moved in too. 🙂

Finished Cat Commission Painting

Just delivered these two buddies.  It is SO satisfying to finish a painting.  Really love these babies and I understand they’re the best of friends.  If you look closely you can see that my final varnish echos both the background and the cats’ fur, AND I signed it with a thumbprint into that glossy final coat!  It is so true that artists put a part of themselves into their work, in ever so many ways.

Oh we love to make faces...

Oh my goodness, they are so beautiful!!! My clients were extremely happy!

SOLD - ‘Watermark’ Painting

SOLD!!!  This beauty, named ‘Watermark’ because it reminds me of water and rocks, is going to someone who collects rocks!  I think it will be a pretty perfect enhancement of their rock collection.  Maybe I sold it because I have a handsome male model, huh?  You can find more art like this at my website, shown below..  Sometimes my clients come to me asking for a painting I’ve sold and want one just like it.  Sorry it doesn’t work that way; once it’s gone, it’s gone.  This is original art in all its quirkiness and I couldn’t reproduce one if I tried.  So... if you like it, let me know, because it’s not going to come again!

Conroe Mistletoe Market!

I decided to make a ton of fluorescent coasters that glow like fire under black light, as in the first photo, plus a bunch of other coasters that are just downright gorgeous like the one in the last photo.  They all have a nice resin finish which makes them impermeable and a cork back to save your furniture in case your kids haven’t ruined it already.

You will find me selling these SATURDAY at the Mistletoe Market in Conroe for twenty bucks a pop.  Come on out; we’ll be there all day!

You can see the reflective shine of the sky.  The resin is super glossy.  That’s one reason why I love it. :)
